  • Paper 1: Extended Response Paper: 75 minutes long, 20% of final grade. The structure of this paper is the same as SL paper 1. However, the questions that require extended responses may be the same as, or different from, the SL paper. Questions in this paper are drawn from the four units of the syllabus including the HL extension material and topics studied at HL only. The maximum mark is 25.
  • Paper 2: Data Response Paper – 105 minute long, worth 30% of the final grade. The structure of this paper is the same as SL paper 2. However, the data response questions may be the same as, or different from, the SL paper. Questions in this paper are drawn from the four units of the syllabus including the HL extension material and topics studied at HL only. The maximum mark is 30.
  • Paper 3 – Policy Paper: 105 minutes long, worth 30% of final grade. Students must respond to two mandatory questions, which are further divided into subparts, including subparts (a) and (b). The questions encompass content from all four units of the syllabus, including the HL extension material and topics specific to the HL level. Command terms indicate the expected depth of response, and both analytic mark schemes and mark bands are used for grading. Students are allowed to use graphic display calculators (GDCs) during the examination. The maximum mark is 60, 30 marks per question.
  • Internal Assessment: Individual Commentaries – 20% of final grade. Students produce a portfolio of three commentaries, based on different units of the syllabus (excluding the introductory unit) and on published extracts from the news media. Each of the three commentaries should use a different key concept as a lens through which to analyze the published extracts. Maximum 800 words for each commentary. The maximum mark is 45.
